On Thursday, 14 March David hosted the Minister for Education, The Hon Martin Dixon MP, on a tour of local schools.
Before entering Parliament, Minister Dixon was a teacher and school principal and he spent three years as principal at St Aloysius Primary School on Balaclava Road. During the visit the Minister met the school’s new principal, Therese Stewart, saw the changes in the buildings and classes and chatted with students. One of the students the Minister spent time with was the child of a parent he taught at the school 30 years ago.
The next stop was Yeshivah Beth Rivkah Colleges where the Minister met with Rabbi Yehoshua Smukler and staff for a tour and a Beth Rivkah school assembly. The students grilled the minister on a number of important educational issues. The Minister said later how impressed he was at the students’ understanding of the current educational debate.
The final school visited was Leibler Yavneh College to visit a class during a library lesson and see the school facilities. While at Leibler Yavneh the Minister also had a in depth briefing by the presidents of eight Jewish day schools on the issues and challenges faced by the sector. Topics discussed included preschool funding, school security and others.
