David leads 2013 Oxfam Trailwalker team with first wheelchair competitor

Live updates from David:

The original story:

This 2013 Oxfam Trailwalker marks the first time in the world a competitor with a physical disability requiring a wheelchair has entered the 100 kilometre, 48 hour fundraising challenge.

The Oxfam Trailwalker event is an arduous trek over rocky and some steep terrain that stretches across the Dandenong Valley Parklands, Churchill, Lysterfield, Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Rangers National Parks in Melbourne’s east. The course has to be completed in less than 48 hours and this year’s event has attracted 750 teams.

David, who successfully completed the Oxfam Trailwalker challenge in 2012, said “this is a great opportunity to raise awareness around the issues of disability and access and work with Parks Victoria to promote ways that all members of our community can experience Victoria’s great state parks.”

Bruce Towers is the team passenger and he is looking forward to the Trailwalker challenge. Bruce has quadriplegia resulting from a horrific helicopter accident that occurred in West Papua in 2006. Three people died from the accident and three others in the helicopter walked out unscathed. Bruce survived but with severe spinal injuries.

Bruce said ‘It is great to be able to participate in the Trailwalker event and be part of the team. It provides me an opportunity to access some of our beautiful park trails and to also support Oxfam.’

The other members of the Parks Victoria teams include Scott Lever, Megan Watson, Phillip Went, David Ponsford, Gary Porter and Ben Hart (David Stratton’s son). State Member for Gembrook Brad Battin and John Kenwright will be the team support crew.

As the April event draws near, you can keep an eye on the team’s training regime. The team will ask for your support and contributions for its fundraising for Oxfam. We would love your support!
