Southwick Supports Scouts Victoria

Member for Caulfield David Southwick MP met with newly appointed Scouts Victoria’s Assistant Chief Commissioner for Development Simon Marks and other members of Scouts Victoria’s leadership team at a reception at Parliament House on Tuesday 4 February.

Scouting in Victoria has grown more than 20 per cent in recent years, to more than 20,000 youth and adult volunteers.

The challenge for Simon Marks, a Brighton resident who first joined the 9th Brighton Scout Group in 1983, is to continue that growth.

Simon says he has enjoyed a wonderful journey through many roles in Scouting over the years.

“And while Scouting continues to adapt its program to the needs of today’s young people, the aims and principles of Scouting are still the same after more than 100 years,” he says.

“Our mission is to contribute to the education of young people, through values based on the Scout Promise and Law, to help build a better world, where people are self-fulfilled as individuals and play a constructive role in society.”

A sentiment that David, a former scout in the 3rd St Kilda Scout Group, whole-heartedly agrees with.

“It was a pleasure to meet with Simon and other leaders of Scouts Victoria at Parliament House this week. The Jewish community make up 125 of the 758 Scouts in the Glen Eira Stonnington district, and I look forward to working with Simon to see that number continue growing.” David said.

“I continue to be a keen supporter of Scouts Victoria and believe participation in the movement helps instil a strong work ethic and develops team bonding skills, which are essential attributes for future leaders,” he added.

Simon’s Scouting service was recognised in 2013 when he was presented with Scouts Australia’s highest award, the Silver Kangaroo, for eminent achievement and exceptional service to Scouting.

He is proud to be part of the team assisting Scouts Victoria’s new Chief Commissioner, Brendan Watson, who, at 41, is the youngest appointed to lead Victorian Scouting.
