Coalition Government tackles anti-Semitic graffiti

David Southwick MP welcomed Minister for Crime Prevention Edward O’Donohue to Caulfield to present three new portable graffiti removal systems to the Jewish Community Council of Victoria, the Anti-Defamation Commission, and the Community Security Group to combat anti-Semitic graffiti.

The Member for Caulfield made an emphatic speech in Parliament earlier this month, asking the Minister for Crime Prevention to visit Caulfield due to the spike in reported anti-Semitic graffiti over summer.

“It’s with mixed emotions that I welcome the Minister to Caulfield, to present graffiti-removal kits” said Mr Southwick.

“I’m happy to see the Victorian Coalition Government continue its strong support for the Jewish community, but it’s saddening that we’re still cleaning away anti-Semitism in 2014.”

Mr O’Donohue said the Victorian Coalition Government is committed to tackling the scourge of graffiti, particularly when it targets different ethnic or religious communities.

“Graffiti is unacceptable at the best of times but when vandals try to smear particular groups it is especially offensive,” Mr O’Donohue said.

“David Southwick and members of the Glen Eira Jewish community alerted me to some of the problems with anti-Semitic graffiti in this area. The Coalition Government is very pleased to be able to assist in this way.

Each of the graffiti removal systems include a 120-litre wheelie bin, a high-pressure water system, graffiti removal products and personal protective equipment.

Mr O’Donohue said the Coalition Government has made a significant investment in combating graffiti and have committed more than $10 million over four years under its Community Crime Prevention program including:

Almost 40,000 square metres of graffiti has been removed in Glen Eira since the council became a Graffiti Removal Program partner in late 2009 – an area equal in size to just under two MCG playing fields.
