On 19th May 2015 Shadow Minister for Energy and Resources David Southwick MP visited Mount Mercer Windfarm with Joshua Morris MP, Member for Western Victoria. The visit was hosted by Windfarm owner Meridian Energy and providing an opportunity to learn of the windfarm’s operation and to discuss innovation in the energy industry.
Mr Southwick took the opportunity to welcome the recent agreement of a new Renewable Energy Target (RET) by the federal government and opposition. After more than a year of back and forth negotiations, the federal government agreed to a new target of 33,000 gigawatt hours. This would see Australia’s energy consumption generated 23.5% by renewables in 2020.
“After 15 months of stalling on the renewable energy target, we finally have federal Liberal and Labor agree on an actual number, creating more jobs, economic growth and renewable energy in the for Victoria,” Mr Southwick said.
“Daniel Andrews plan for a go-it-alone scheme is a recipe for duplication, more red tape and a cost to business, which would be bad news for Victorian energy bills.”
The new RET will help encourage millions of dollars’ worth of investment in the construction of wind farms in Ballarat and country Victoria.
