The Andrews Labor Government has today confirmed it is not working with energy retailers to bust large energy-consuming crystal methamphetamine (ice) manufacturing laboratories in Victoria.
Energy and Resources Minister Lily D’Ambrosio today told the Public Accounts and Estimates Committee that neither she nor her department are looking to work with energy retailers in using data to assist Victoria Police in locating ice labs.
Fatal drug overdoses in Victoria involving methamphetamine increased by more than 250 per cent between 2010 and 2013, according to the Penington Institute, a not-for-profit group assisting communities dealing with ice.
A report from Turning Point and Ambulance Victoria revealed the number of ice attendances in metropolitan Melbourne rose from 107 in 2008-09 to a staggering 1112 in 2013-14.
Comments from Shadow Energy and Resources Minister David Southwick MP
“Victoria is facing an ice-epidemic but we learn that Daniel Andrews is putting this problem in the too-hard basket.
“What Victoria needs are solutions but all Daniel Andrews is giving is more more talk and no action.”
