Daniel Andrews playing catch-up at twice the cost

Labor’s announcement today of an expansion to the Chisholm Road Prison is a costly catch- up from a Government already running the nation’s most expensive correctional system.

Prior to the last election, the Liberal Nationals planned to expand Labor’s 700 bed LaraPrison to 1,300 beds using a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model, which would incur no additional cost to taxpayers.

The Andrews Labor Government has so far budgeted approximately $1 million per bed for the Chisholm Road Prison.

This contrasts to the recently completed maximum security Macquarie and Cessnock Correctional Centres in NSW, which were built at a cost of approximately $500,000 per bed– half the cost of Labor’s new prison.

Daniel Andrews likes to talk about funding programs to reduce recidivism, just imagine whatcould be achieved if he wasn’t paying twice as much as other states to build our prisons.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Corrections, David Southwick:

“The Andrews Labor Government is playing catch-up on keeping our community safe.

If Labor were able to effectively manage projects, millions of extra dollars could be invested in programs to reduce recidivism and help offenders turn their lives around.

With Daniel Andrews paying twice as much for new maximum security prisons as NSW, it’slittle wonder Victorian taxpayers are funding the nation’s most expensive correctional system.”
