Reports today that an employee at the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre has been stabbed is the latest in a long line of serious incidents in Daniel Andrews chaotic Youth Justice System.
Shortly after 1pm today, a youth justice worker in his 40s was stabbed in the neck with a makeshift shiv in an attack which easily could have proven fatal.
Unfortunately incidents such as these are all too common, with the Department of Justice and Community Safety revealing in June this year that one-in-four youth justice workers, front-line juvenile prison staff had quit the job over the preceding financial year.
Furthermore, a September 2019 Ombudsman report found that over a 12 month period, 40 per cent of the 13,653 lockdowns at Malmsbury were a result of staff shortages throughout the facility.
With such violence and critical staff shortages commonplace throughout Victoria’s youth justice facilities, it’s little why Victoria’s justice system is in utter chaos under Daniel Andrews.
Comments attributable to David Southwick MP, Shadow Minister for Corrections:
“If Victoria’s Youth Justice Centres were any other workplace or business they would be shut down immediately.
“Every Victorian deserves to come home safe from work but Daniel Andrews continues to let down our youth justice workers.
“What chance do young people have of turning their lives around with such regular violence across our Youth Justice Centres?”
