Staff walkout raises the white flag on Daniel Andrews’ chaotic youth justice system

The staff walkout at the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre highlights just how broken, dysfunctional and dangerous Victoria’s youth justice system has become under Daniel Andrews.

The Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre has been placed in lockdown and staff have left the facility. The Community and Public Sector Union has described this as an occupational health and safety cease work.

The walk-off follows 311 assaults on staff in 120 days. Two serious incidents just this week have resulted in a staff member being stabbed in the neck and another fighting for life with critical head injuries following an assault with a cricket bat.

The crisis at Malmsbury also follows the release of crime statistics last week which showed the largest cohort of alleged offenders for violent crimes against the person remains 15-19 years of age.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Corrections, David Southwick:

“How can we expect to rehabilitate young offenders in facilities which are so dangerous that staff walk off the job?”

“Safety issues in Victoria’s youth justice system have reached boiling point because of inaction from Labor.”

“Staff are under assault and young offenders are becoming hardened criminals because the Andrews Labor Government has failed to provide adequate facilities and staffing for Victoria’s Youth Justice System.”

“The aim is to rehabilitate young offenders but under Labor many are coming out worse than when they went in.”
