Liberal Nationals call for prison system review

Today, the Victorian Liberal Nationals have written to the Victorian Auditor-General, requesting a full investigation into Victoria’s chaotic correctional system under the Andrews Labor Government.

Highlighting the chaos in Victoria’s prisons, a number of concerning security incidents have taken place at Port Phillip Prison over recent weeks, including:

  • a major security breach resulting in three inmates scaling the prison roof brandishing metal bars
  • a corrections officer being stabbed 11 times in a brutal ambush attack as part of a prison gang initiation
  • reports of terror inmates attempting to radicalise up to a dozen other serious offenders
  • the killing of inmate Mark Pollard, 48, who was reportedly assaulted by up to six prisoners in the Gorgon Unit and the lack of CCTV footage of the incident.

These incidents come despite Labor operating the nation’s most expensive prison system, with taxpayers spending $317.90 per prisoner per day – a rate over 60 per cent higher than New South Wales.

Victorians deserve to know what is really going on behind our prison walls and Daniel Andrews must now support a full, independent investigation into Victoria’s correctional system.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Corrections, David Southwick:

“The chaos in Daniel Andrews’ prison system must be investigated.

“With bashings, drug use and gangs running riot in Victorian prisons, Daniel Andrews is simply not up to the job.”
