Remembering Sir Zelman Cowen

On Tuesday 13December, David attended the state funeral of Sir Zelman Cowen at the Temple Beth Israel synagogue.

David was truly saddened to learn of the death of Sir Zelman, a truly great Australian who had a deep and wide-ranging influence on public life and on everyone who knew him. Throughout his distinguished life and career as an academic and Governor General, Sir Zelman offered his wisdom and counsel to all. He was also deeply involved in countless community organisations, including many in the Victorian Jewish Community.

The incredible impact that Sir Zelman had upon so many could clearly be seen at his funeral. Prime-ministers, members of the legal profession and community leaders all came to show tribute to a man who gave so much of his life to serving the public in any way he could.

David was particularly moved by the eulogy given at the event by Josh Frydenberg, the Federal Member for Kooyong, who had a long and close relationship with Sir Zelman.

David had the opportunity to interact with Sir Zelman on a number of occasions through his role in Victorian community organisations and always viewed him with great admiration and respect.

“Sir Zelman was a great Victorian and member of the Jewish Community who did so much for Australia,” David said. “I had the privilege of serving as his Deputy on the Victoria University Foundation and as Patron of Ardoch in two of his many community roles. He always was such an active, kind and supportive person. His legacy will live forever.”
