Glen Eira Council Australia Day Awards

On Friday 20 January, David attended Glen Eira Council’s annual Australia Day awards breakfast presentation at Glen Eira Town Hall.

The council presented its awards for Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year as well as for Community Group of the Year.

The Citizen of the Year award was received by Frank Moore for his long and dedicated commitment to the scouting movement over more than 33 years. Frank currently serves as the District Commissioner for the Glen Eira and Stonnington Region and is also heavily involved in acting as a mentor for young scouting leaders. David has also been extremely impressed with Frank’s work for the local Jewish community as the President of the Etz Chayim Synagogue.

Local resident Daniel Gregg-Mantle received the Young Citizen of the Year award for his inspirational work with the Botswana Orphan Project. Daniel organised fundraising events at his school, McKinnon Secondary College, and in the wider community and successfully raised over $15,000 for the building of a new orphanage for some of the thousands of children in Botswana who have lost their parents to HIV/AIDS. Daniel also travelled to Botswana with his family to personally help construct the orphanage.

Finally, the Glen Eira Chinese Senior Citizens Club was honoured as the Glen Eira Community Group of the Year. The club was the first Chinese seniors club to operate in Glen Eira and provides its members with the chance to take part in a wide range of social and educational activities.

The guests at the event also heard from Professor Jeffery Rosenfeld AM, who works as both the Director of the Neurosurgery Department at Alfred University and as Major General and Surgeon General in the Australian Defence Force. Professor Rosenfeld discussed the importance of public and community service and congratulated all the winners on their outstanding achievements.

“All the winners today and all those other individuals nominated for awards are fully deserving of the community’s gratitude and admiration for their truly outstanding commitment to public service,” David said.
