Chief Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks Visits Melbourne

David was proud to attend a number of functions with the Chief Rabbi of the Commonwealth Lord Jonathan Sacks who has been visiting Australia.

On Friday 27 January, David attended a Shabbat service at Melbourne Hebrew Congregation at which the Chief Rabbi was the guest of honour.

On Sunday 29 January, David also attended a ceremony commemorating the 155th anniversary of East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation and heard from Chief Rabbi of the Commonwealth Lord Jonathan Sacks who has been visiting Australia.

The ceremony began with a unique double dedication of two Sefer Torahs for the synagogue at Parliament House in the presence of the Chief Rabbi. Following the dedication, the two scrolls were brought to the synagogue as part of a procession from Parliament House through the Parliament Gardens and along Albert Street.

David was also present at fundraising dinner that night at the Crown Palladium raising money for restorations at the synagogue.

The Chief Rabbi delivered a number of speeches at the different events but he broadly focused upon the importance of a strong education and ensuring that youth are strongly engaged within their communities, sentiments David strongly agrees with.

“East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation is a landmark of Melbourne’s Jewish community and it was fantastic to be able to celebrate this momentous anniversary with a guest with the stature of Chief Rabbi Sacks,” David said. “The Chief Rabbi is a truly admirable religious leader who has done so much both for his own faith and in encouraging a spirit of understanding and harmony between different faiths, a valuable lesson in a society as multicultural as our own.”
